Chorizo Burritos, Historic Prison and a Literary Cat

Or the retelling of my recently rad weekend in Philly.

Last Saturday night, I discovered the charms of a small Fishtown bar/taqueria - Loco Pez. After spending about 23 seconds Googling the translation of this odd name, I think it means “crazy fish”. Which doesn’t really clear anything up for me. But I can say this, I had a bad ass chorizo potato burrito and some tasty chips and salsa. I also saw a cool hook rug framed on the wall and Joey Sweeney from Philebrity (I know; you don’t care, but you really do).

Here’s a picture of Tim exploring the burrito with his tongue.

On Sunday, we decided to finally cash in some free admission tix I scored for a tour of the Eastern State Penitentiary. It was pretty cool as you can imagine. We learned some interesting things. Like for the most part, prison sucks…and you should not commit crimes. Or at least get caught.  Did you know that ESP was the first facility on this continent to have flushing toilets? Or that it had air conditioning and heat before the White House? Yerp!

Some people I know believe this place is haunted. Those people are dumb.

There are so many beautiful things to look at, it’s kinda overwhelming.

Al Capone, one of the most notorious gangsters of the last century was also one of the most famous “guests” of ESP. This is his pimp pad. That lamp!

Finally, because no post is really complete without a cat or dog reference, I will leave you with two!

Sadly, I don’t have a pic of one of the most awesome cats I have ever had the pleasure of spending 20 minutes with on the floor of an old Fairmount bookstore, Bookhaven - but good news is you can go and visit him anytime you want! His name is The Artful Dodger and he’s so god damn cute and friendly, you just have to see for yourself.

But I am pleased to present you with one final image I took on my tour of ESP. Meet “Pep - The Cat Murdering Dog”.

According to ESP, this black labrador retriever was admitted to Eastern State Penitentiary on August 12, 1924. Why you may ask? Dummy. Pennsylvania Governor Gifford Pinchot sentenced Pep to serve life without parole at Eastern for killing his wife’s cherished cat.

Yeah right. That shit never would have happened if he was a yellow lab…
